Technological Scalability in Focus - CLARITY Wednesday

Scalability is the capacity of a product, company, system, team, etc. to provide services that match growing demand. We must do things that scale and that allow us to lower our cost structure and improve our speed so that we can capture reuse.

3 Technological Scalability Facts Worth Considering:

  • The concept of scalability that is built into engineering processes should encourage all engineers to design and think with scalability in mind.
  • With scalability in mind, it’s often necessary to transition back-end systems from monolithic to service-oriented applications. Front-end systems must transition from dated technology to modern frameworks designed with scalability as a core feature.
  • Always ask two questions when analyzing an architectural design: “Can this design support the current operational scale?” and “Can this design support 10 times the users of the current operational scale?” This is a simple yet effective way to address the scalability problem and encourage engineers to think about their design solutions in a very broad way.

Assess the Value of Technological Scalability to Your Organization

Significant investment is being made by companies in automation and reusable functional pieces of software to drive speed and scalability. This includes using core reusable platforms like microservices and APIs.

What value do you place on ensuring you have adequate business and IT resources (people, process, and technology) to support your organization’s growth objectives?

Determine Your Organization's Related Pain & Frustration

In order to fully assess your level of pain (and frustration!) it’s helpful to know where you want to be. So…what does good look like?

A low pain example of Technological Scalability would be: We routinely assess our current applications to ensure that we possess ample capacity to meet an expanded customer base as well as ensuring peak operational efficiency.

What is your organization's level of pain as it relates to Technological Scalability?
